Tip Jar’s Ingredients: Origin Story 🍴
Although The Tip Jar Foundation was officially established in 2023, its roots trace back to early 2019. The idea was sparked by George Aquino, former Vice President of Operations at AHC Hospitality, a Grand Rapids-based hospitality management company. Recognizing the rapid growth of West Michigan’s food and beverage scene, George envisioned an event that would honor and celebrate the changemakers shaping the industry.
This vision led to the creation of the West Michigan Food and Beverage Awards—an event dedicated to recognizing excellence across the region, from Muskegon to South Haven. The inaugural awards ceremony took place in early 2020, with proceeds donated to Grand Rapids Community College’s Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.
Since then, the event has grown in size and impact each year, ultimately inspiring the launch of The Tip Jar Foundation to manage and distribute scholarships directly to students. In 2024 alone, the foundation raised $10,000 for its scholarship fund, with ambitions to increase that amount annually.

“Our mission is to provide financial assistance to individuals in the food and beverage industry, including assistance for tuition and education. We believe that everyone in the industry deserves the opportunity to advance their skills and education, and that financial barriers should not prevent individuals from achieving their career goals. Through our events and initiatives, we aim to support the well-being of workers in the industry by providing access to education and training that can lead to career advancement and financial stability.”
